Buster the Bull makes his getaway in a blizzard, and it's up to Zack to save the Brown Palace Hotel gift shop - and his new friend Alice
Zack wrapped his arms around the huge bull's neck. "Don't worry," Zack said, swallowing hard. "No busy city or world famous Stock Show can scare us. Right?"
Zack is looking forward to taking Buster the bull to the National Western Stock Show in Denver. As Zack and his dad sing their way down the road, Buster the bull doesn't find his first trip away from the ranch much fun. When the snow turns into a blinding blizzard and Zack's dad must detour through downtown, Buster sees his chance to make his own hay. Thundering out of the truck, Buster gallops straight through the doors of the Brown Palace Hotel where, he confronts Alice, who works with her mother in the hotel gift shop. Zack must act quickly to save his new friend Alice and Buster from disaster.
Kathleen Cook Waldron's lively story of a boy and his bull is complemented by the rich and vibrant painting by Alan and Lea Daniel, who capture the drama and triumph of the roundup at the Palace.

K-Gr 3-After loading Buster the bull into the back of their pickup, Zack and his dad begin the long drive to Denver for the National Western Stock Show, singing all the way to keep the animal calm. When they arrive, a winter storm forces them to detour through the downtown area where traffic is creeping along. This makes Buster nervous, and he breaks out of the truck and races straight through the open doors of the Brown Palace Hotel. The rest of the story tells how Zack and a girl he meets save Buster from disaster. The colorful pen-and-ink-on-gouache artwork sets the mood and atmosphere for this adventure. The snowy scenes are so realistic that readers will want to pull their sweaters a little closer, and the pictures of young Alice calming the huge beast are totally satisfying. Varied perspectives add to the movement, energy, and excitement of the story. An author's note describes a similar incident that occurred in 1996.-Elaine Lesh Morgan, Multnomah County Library, Portland, OR (c) Copyright 2010. Kirkus Review
Zack's helping his father take Buster, their prize bull, to the National Western Stock Show near Denver. It's the first time at the show for bull and boy, and Zack comforts Buster as he loads him into the truck. Dad and Zack sing along to country tunes as they drive through a blizzard to the show, but Buster seems agitated. During a detour through downtown Denver, Buster breaks out and mistakes the wide doors of the Brown Palace Hotel for the wide doors of his barn. Once inside, he's confused and angered by the slippery floors and screaming people; he corners young Alice, who helps her mother in the hotel shop. Zack rescues her and Buster, and they go to the stock show together. A steer did make a run through the Palace lobby in 1996, but those events only suggested this tale. The Daniels' watercolor illustrations are the best feature here. The text is realistic but lacks the drive and individuality needed to make it a crowd pleaser. Still, this will make a serviceable read-aloud for older children. A good regional purchase or for large libraries serving rural communities.
