Horn Book Review
Condensed graphic-novel versions of Stevenson's novel and two of Dickens's works (including the less well-known Mugby Junction) give reluctant readers an entryway into classic literature. The retellings are only adequate, but the illustrations and pacing of the graphic novels serve the material well. While not a substitute for the originals, these books retain some of the tone and flavor. [Review covers these Classic Illustrated titles: Scrooge and Kidnapped.] (c) Copyright 2013. Booklist Review
Papercutz's Classics Illustrated Deluxe series has brought together two of Charles Dickens' holiday tales here. While many versions of A Christmas Carol exist, this graphic-novel adaptation of miserly Ebenezer Scrooge's holiday redemption is quite nicely done, featuring colorful and striking illustrations. The true genius, however, is pairing A Christmas Carol with Dickens' much-lesser-known holiday story, A Remembrance of Mugby, set in Mugby Junction, a town with a train station whose trains go everywhere. It is to Mugby that restless Mr. Barbox Brothers heads, it is from Mugby that restless Mr. Barbox Brothers leaves, and yet, it is also to Mugby that Mr. Barbox Brothers returns, always bringing with him a little something from his travels to give to his dear friend, Phoebe Lamps. Both illustrated stories would be great to share with fans of holiday-themed titles, as well as students whose curriculum includes Dickens' classics.--Mack, Candice Copyright 2010 Booklist
