Summary:

Summary

With humans threatened by otherworldly creatures, orphans Emily and William Snow, and their friends--the pickpocket Spring-Heeled Jack and the wisecracking Corrigan--find themselves two hundred years in the past, trapped in the London of 1666. Desperately in need of help, they go in search of Sir Christopher Wren, who was head of the Invisible Order, an organization dedicated to fighting this threat. But Wren's never even heard of the Order and has no interest in their story.

Stranded, the four cannot agree on their next step. But they'll have to decide quickly, because their enemies are on the move and the Fire King is ready to attack and burn London to the ground.

School Library Journal Review

Gr 5-8-Katherine Kellgren brings stunning narration to Paul Crilley's sequel (2011) to Rise of the Darklings (2010, both Egmont USA). Emily Snow, having obtained the key to Faerie in the first book, is now sent 200 years back in time to The Great Fire of London to save the city from an evil fey. Many historical figures are mentioned including Merlin and Christopher Wren, both involved with the Invisible Order that was established to keep peace with faeries. The book is loaded with female empowerment as almost all leadership roles are held by women or girls. Though the novel works best for those familiar with the first title, enough back story is provided for listeners to follow along. Meanwhile her little brother, William, along with Corrigan, a piskie, seek the Raven King who is the only one who may be able to stop The Fire King from destroying all of Britain. Kellgren not only gives full voice to each character, but also maintains just the right pitch for such an adventure-reflective as Emily and her friends sort out the puzzle, yet breathless during a rooftop battle.
