Author Notes

KALLIE GEORGE is an author, editor and creative writing teacher. She has written numerous books for early readers, including Anne Arrives (book 1), The Magical Animal Adoption Agency series, The Heartwood Hotel series and The Wings of Olympus series, as well as numerous picture books, such as Goodnight, Anne, Secrets I Know and The Lost Gift . Kallie currently lives in Vancouver, BC, and feels positively certain she and Anne Shirley are kindred spirits.

ABIGAIL HALPIN is an illustrator living in southern Maine, a few miles from the sea. Her illustrations are a blend of traditional and digital media, and she has illustrated many beautiful children's books including Finding Wild , Fort Building Time and, most recently, Mama's Belly . Her parents gave her a copy of Anne of Green Gables for her eighth birthday, which still sits on her bookcase in her studio, and her work for the Anne chapter book series was influenced by her teen memories of Prince Edward Island as one of the most beautiful, magical spots on the planet.

Gr 1-3-George presents a second early reader book (after Anne Arrives) based on L.M. Montgomery's timeless tale of friendship Anne of Green Gables. Anne Shirley, a Canadian orphan, is now in the care of siblings Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert and living at Green Gables. Anne meets a neighbor girl, Diana Barry, and the two girls immediately find each other "kindred spirits." Anne is invited to her first Sunday School picnic, but her dream of spending time with her new best friend is dashed when she is accused of stealing Marilla's family heirloom, which leads to misunderstandings and an attempted confession gone awry. George's adaptation embraces the source material and distills it into appropriate content for emergent readers. Longtime fans of the novel will enjoy Anne's flowery language and enthusiastic offerings of friendship, while new readers will commiserate as Anne's picnic opportunity is unfairly threatened. Halpin's watercolor and pencil illustrations complement the text and keep readers in the era of Anne's story with engaging simplicity. Horn Book Review

Picking up where Anne Arrives left off (but also understandable on its own), this chapter book relates events from Anneâ€TMs early days at Green Gables, faithfully but with brief paragraphs and copious white space that should appeal to newly independent readers.
