Extent: 32pp, 50 to75 words per page
Text at level 3 is simple and engaging with plenty of interest and repetition, with some more variety of language and information than level 2. Text introduces a few more challenging words and a wider variety of tenses.
Spiders and insects may be yucky, but they sure are interesting. From hissing cockroaches to bloodsucking leaches, this book about mini beasts is not for the faint of heart! The high-interest subject matter and outrageous facts presented in this early nonfiction chapter book is perfect for reluctant readers, and beginning readers starting to read alone proficiently.

Author Notes

Anita Ganeri is the author of award-winning books in the Horrible Geography series. She is currently residing at West Yorkshire, England with her family. Anita has spent many years working for publishers both as an editor and a foreign rights manager. She has published over 100 books.
Thea Feldman has written and edited hundreds of children's books, including Suryia and Roscoe and Suryia Swims!, which she co-authored with Dr. Bhagavan Antle. She has also worked at the Wildlife Conservation Society where she researched and wrote about the animals in the Society's five urban wildlife parks in New York City. She is a former editorial director at Scholastic.

School Library Journal Review

K-Gr 2-Kids will enjoy the photography in these titles. Tadpoles, a Level 1 volume, follows frogs from egg to tadpole to adult. The shots of hundreds of frog eggs place readers right in the water with the jellylike orbs. The text is clean, simple, and narrowly focused, making it very manageable. The final spread repeats a handful of facts. Fur, a Level 2 reader, highlights an assortment of critters with bright, appealing photos and basic but interesting information nicely organized into two-page sections. The material in Creepy-Crawlies, a Level 3 reader, is plentiful but scattershot. The cutesy term "creepy-crawlies" is used liberally throughout the book, and it's even given a definition: "What makes them creepy-crawlies? They are all very small animals!" Clearly, that explanation is as problematic as the term. All three volumes conclude with a glossary; Creepy-Crawlies also includes an index. Fur is a solid purchase and Tadpoles is not too far behind when the repetitive spread is overlooked; Creepy-Crawlies is an additional purchase.-Alyson Low, Fayetteville Public Library, AR (c) Copyright 2014. Horn Book Review

According to this book, "creepy-crawlies" are insects, spiders, worms, and snails--"all very small animals!" Readers will discover how these creatures move, what they might eat, where they might live, etc. The amount of information, as well as the blurring of classification lines, could confuse young readers.
