Author Notes
Doug Cushman was born in Springfield, Ohio, on May 4, 1953. He moved to Connecticut with his family when he was 15 years old. Cushman attended a private art school in Connecticut called the Paier School of Art.
While in high school he created comic books, selling them to his classmates for a nickel a piece. He also drew a comic strip for the school newspaper. Since 1978 he has illustrated over 80 children's books, 14 of which he wrote himself.
Aunt Eater Loves a Mystery is a Reading Rainbow book. Other awards include a notable trade book honor from the National Council of Teachers of English for King Karfu, a nomination for the 1998 Garden State Children's Book award for Aunt Eater's Mystery Christmas and the 1996 Rebuen Award for Magazine and Book Illustration sponsored by the National Cartoonists Society for King Karfu.

K-Gr 2-- Aunt Eater, introduced in Aunt Eater Loves a Mystery (HarperCollins, 1987), returns. Would-be sleuths can try to solve the mysterious disappearances of a ferry captain, a diamond ring, and a dinosaur bone, and determine the identity of a strange woman. Cushman enhances his text with numerous watercolor illustrations that assist readers with visual clues. Children will appreciate Aunt Eater's excitement when she rings the ferry's ``All Ashore'' bell and meets her favorite author. Another good addition to the series. --Gale W. Gr. 1-2. Here's a sprightly, easy-to-read chapter book starring amateur detective Aunt Eater, who is looking forward to a relaxing vacation reading mystery novels. Unfortunately, nothing works out as planned. First, the captain of the cruise ship she's on disappears, then a hotel guest is the victim of theft, and Professor Slagbottom's dinosaur bone goes astray. Aunt, of course, is up to each challenge, and beginning readers are bound to enjoy her simply written, straightforward adventures. Each chapter is a story in itself, the type is large and clear, and the artwork is brightly colored and plentiful--Aunt is especially fetching, decked out in a mop cap with granny glasses.
