Batman: who is he, who were his parents, why did he become a superhero, and who are his adversaries? These are all questions young fans of Batman have asked through generations. In this Backstories series installment, readers get background information on Batman, Batgirl, Robin, their foes, and the Batmobile. As a boy, Bruce Wayne fell down a hole and had a frightening encounter with some bats. Later, when his parents were murdered, he swore that as an adult he'd come back to Gotham City, find Joe Chill, and vindicate their deaths. The first four chapters follow a loose plotline that gives the backstory of Bruce Wayne, his equipment, and his transition to Batman. From this point, disjointed chapters provide information about Robin (there were actually three Boy Wonders!), Batgirl, the Justice League of superheroes, and their enemies. Numerous black-and-white sketches enhance the text and are joined by a detailed chronology and fast facts.
