Summary
The rascals from the world's friendliest family circus are back in the second installment of this "smafunderful"* fully illustrated series.
Everyone knows Sir Sidney's Circus is the best in the world. But who's the star of the show? The Circus Times is having a contest to find out. Just thinking about it gives Sir Sidney a worrywart, and it's quickly clear why. Soon after he goes off to rest, the performers start thinking too much about winning the trophy and not enough about putting on a good show.
Meanwhile, it looks as if ringmaster-in-training Barnabas Brambles might need some help managing the crew, so Bert and Gert, the sly brother-and-sister mice who travel with the show, set out to write a book to teach him how it's done.
Does Bert and Gert's plan work? And who is the star of the circus? All will be revealed in The Greatest Star on Earth .

Kate Klise and M. Sarah Klise have collaborated on numerous award-winning middle-grade and picture-book projects, including the Regarding the Fountain and 43 Old Cemetery Road series. Illustrator M. Sarah Klise and author Kate Klise and are sisters and collaborators. They started making books together many years ago in their bedroom in Peoria, Illinois. Kate wrote the words; Sarah drew the pictures. Their first book was about an adventure-loving little mouse that traveled around the country. That story was never published. (In fact, it ended up in the garbage can!) But the Klise sisters had so much fun making their first book, they kept writing and drawing. And now they've published more than twenty award-winning books for young readers, including Regarding the Fountain and Dying to Meet You. The Klise sisters no longer share a bedroom. Kate lives in Missouri and travels often to visit schools and libraries. Sarah lives in California. But the two sisters still enjoy working together, especially on their new series about a pair of circus mice. (By the way, "Klise" rhymes with "mice.")

Gr 2-5-The stars of Sir Sidney's Circus are back. This time, they are competing for a trophy to be given by Polly Pumpkinseed to "The Greatest Star on Earth." Of course, each performer thinks he or she should win and their squabbling over who is best starts to get to Sir Sidney. In fact, he develops a worrywart and is sent off to his peanut farm to rest. Barnabas Brambles returns to run the show and circus mice Gert and Bert have their paws full trying to keep him on track. The animals' asides are amusing and advanced vocabulary is usually defined within the story. There are images and speech bubbles on each page and illustrated issues of Polly Pumpkinseed's Circus Times newspaper are interspersed throughout the tale. The performers in Sir Sidney's Circus are thrown off their game when a newspaper proposes a contest to determine the best performer. Pun- and gag-filled narration, gentle messaging about teamwork and kindness, and frequent expressive spot art enrich the quirky, accessible story. Characters' struggles to live up to Sir Sidney's expectations are understatedly complex and will resonate with readers. (c) Copyright 2014. Who is the best performer? That is the question in this second in the entertaining Three-Ring Rascals chapter-book series.The premise is quickly established: Polly Pumpkinseed, publisher of the Circus Times, decides to sponsor a contest to determine who is best in Sir Sidney's circus. Sir Sidney thinks his stars are all great and doesn't want anyone to have their feelings hurt. He smells trouble ahead. More to the point: He actually develops a worrywart on his nose and is directed to rest, leaving the circus in Barnabas Brambles' hands. With circus mice Bert and Gert once again acting as his conscience, Barnabas behaves tolerably well this time. But Elsa the elephant, Leo the lion and the Famous Flying Banana Brothers become consumed with the contest. The story and the language trips along, as do the performers in their misguided efforts to win. As before, Gert's invented expressions are sprinkled throughout, sure to arouse giggles ("elephant + bellyflop = eleflop"). Illustrations, complete with speech bubbles, are seamlessly interwoven with the text to capture the action and misadventures. There's even a rousing song as the story moves toward its conclusion, asking "Can Three-Ring Rascals make this end okay?" Indeed, when they pull together, they can!Absurd situations, winning characters and plenty of heartfelt moments and laughs combine to make this a surefire hit. In this second installment in the Three-Ring Rascals series (The Show Must Go On!, 2013), circus owner Sir Sidney decides to give once-dastardly animal tamer Barnabus Brambles one more chance. When Sidney becomes ill with a worrywart, Barnabus' moral fortitude is tested; in fact, all of the performers find their ethics compromised when the Circus Times' editor announces she will deem one of them the Greatest Star on Earth. After numerous unsuccessful antics, they realize teamwork is more important.
