Summary

Franklin wants to play "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" on the piano, so he begins taking lessons. He learns the scales, but he would rather play baseball than practice. Will Franklin ever master the song? This Level 2 first reader contains longer stories, varied sentences, increased vocabulary, more difficult visual clues and some repetition.

Author Notes

Paulette Bourgeois was born July 20, 1951 in Winnepeg , Canada. She graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 1974 with a B.Sc. and worked briefly as an occupational therapist before returning to Carleton University to study journalism. She has worked in television and print before writing her first book, Franklin in the Dark.

Although Paulette is best-known for the Franklinthe Turtle books, she is also the writer of fiction and non-fiction for young readers. Her book, The Sun: Starting with Space was shortlisted for a Science in Society Book Award (1995), given by the Canadian Science Writer's Association, and won the honor of Parents' Choice Approval, given by the US Parents' Choice Foundation (1997).

Franklin the turtle learns that playing a musical instrument and performing magic tricks take practice and require making choices about priorities. The first two books in this new easy-reader series starring the popular turtle are based on episodes of the television show. The format is well suited to young readers, but the cartoony art and uninspired text are dull.
