Horn Book Review
Ten family members and one cat prepare, eat, clean up after, and enjoy Thanksgiving dinner in this lightweight introduction to numbers one through ten. The numbers are written in the text and appear in numerical form both in and above the undistinguished, framed watercolor-and-pencil artwork. From HORN BOOK 1991, (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review
Ages 3-6. "On Thanksgiving Day, Papa stuffs one fat turkey / [on the next page] Mama bakes two pumpkin pies" and so on, until Grandma lights 10 candles and all the relatives settle down for a traditional feast together. Then comes the count in reverse as they stack "ten empty plates," shake "nine crumpled napkins," clean up, goof off, and play around in the spirit of the season. Each page gives the child an opportunity to count the objects and to recognize the numeral. Simple, colorful artwork in a rather naive style illustrates the text. Straightforward and pleasing, this picture book will fit into many Thanksgiving read-aloud sessions. ~--Carolyn Phelan
