Author Notes

Sue Hendra studied illustration at Brighton University while also selling doughnuts from a kiosk at Chessington Zoo. Sue has now illustrated over 100 books for children. When Sue met Paul Linnet she found another person with the same silly sense of humor as her and they fell in love and started writing and illustrating together. Their creative brilliance soon led them to come up with a wealth of bestselling, award-winning picture books including Barry the Fish with Fingers , Norman the Slug with the Silly Shell , Supertato , and the Laugh Out Loud Book Award-winning I Need a Wee! . Sue and Paul live in Brighton with their daughter Wanda who inspired Sue's picture book and TV series Wanda and the Alien .

Paul Linnet was born by the sea near to Brighton, but he grew up in Derby, where he studied graphic design and played guitar in a band called The Chihuahuas. Eventually Paul moved back to Brighton where he met Sue Hendra and they instantly fell in love. Their celebrated picture book partnership has created many bestselling, award-winning books including Barry the Fish with Fingers , Norman the Slug with the Silly Shell , Supertato , and most recently the Laugh Out Loud Book Award-winning I Need a Wee . Sue and Paul live with their daughter Wanda in a house in Brighton where Paul likes to fuss about with an old motorbike and still plays the guitar.

When an ice cream cone lands on his head, feline Keith tries to save face by claiming the cone is a magic hat. At first the trick fools his companions, but when a dog chases the cats up a tree, can Keith make the canine disappear? Though the bright rainbow-sprinkles palette may draw readers' attention, it can't make up for the slick art and the lackluster story line. (c) Copyright 2019. Ice cream coneor magic hat?One day Keith the cat is happily walking through the meadow when "Plop!"a triple-scoop ice cream cone lands on his head (ice cream-side down). The other cats mock himuntil he denies that it's an ice cream cone. He says it's a magic hat. Of course, now the others call on him to do some magic. As Keith reaches for the "chocolatey magic wand" that fell off his hat, it appears to move on its own (readers will note the line of tiny ants that are trying to make off with it). Keith sees the ants but the others don't; now they want more magic, and Keith likes the attention. Keith (coincidentally) summons a family of rabbits that pops out of the ground, amazing the other cats. When a dog menaces the group, though, Keith can't make it disappear, so they all race up a tree. When his ice cream hat slips off Keith's head and lands on the dog, something unexpected happens. Prolific British author/illustrator Hendra's 2012 tale of feline foolishness here makes its American debut. The boldly colored, digitally created illustrations are full of wide-eyed cats of different shades. With its brief text and clear visual cues, it's a good introduction for younger preschoolers to the synergy of text and artwork.A silly romp that does some subtly hard lifting.
