To feed or not to feed; that is the question that plagues Gemma as she attempts to make peace with her decision to live alongside her siren sisters while denying the more monstrous temptations that come part and parcel with the tail and the scales. Though confident in her decision to protect the ones she loves by leaving them behind, Gemma is increasingly unsure that she will be able to resist the powerful urge to kill in order to survive. Back on the homefront, Gemma's boyfriend, Alex, her older sister Harper, and Harper's boyfriend, Daniel, are doing everything in their power to find Gemma and figure out a way to get rid of the sirens--for good. Fortunately, the trio manages to rescue Gemma and bring her home to her ecstatic father. Unfortunately, none of them have a clue what they will do when a vengeful Penn, Lexi and Thea return to claim their "sister." The second installment of the Watersong series will likely satisfy fans of the first. There's considerably more action throughout this time around, and Hocking does a better job differentiating among the sirens and allowing each to become a more rounded, distinct character. Thea in particular intrigues as it becomes clear that, like Gemma, she too is a somewhat reluctant siren. That said, this second outing is unlikely to win new fans to the series. Readers who devoured Wake (2012) will jump right into the second novel in the Watersong series as it picks up and runs. Harper is determined to find Gemma, who is realizing that being a siren is more dangerous than she imagined. The alternating narration builds suspense and allows the sisters' individual stories and characters to develop. Harper is the levelheaded, determined older sister, while Gemma struggles with impulses and consequences. When she finally gives in to her hunger, feeding on a human heart, Gemma is horrified with herself and determined to break free, despite being overcome by her feast's druglike positive effects (her hair, skin, and voice become even lovelier). Harper brings Gemma back to Capri, where Alex and Daniel prove to be an enticing challenge, unlike the men the sirens have encountered before. Pithy banter and humor interwoven with suspenseful supernatural and sweetly romantic elements will satisfy fans of this quick-moving, easy-to-read series. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Hocking's history as a self-publishing phenom made her name well-known and St. Martin's hopes to keep it that way massive marketing campaigns are expected.--Booth, Heather Copyright 2010 Booklist
