Marisol is turning eight, and it's time to plan a birthday party that will be fabulous, marvelous, and divine. She also hopes that Abuelita, who lives far away in Peru, will be able to come to the celebration.

Author Notes

Monica Brown is the award-winning author of over thirty books for children, including Marisol McDonald Doesn't Match/no combina , Sharuko , Maya's Blanket/la manta de Maya , Waiting for the Biblioburro , Frida and Her Animalitos , and El Cuarto Turquesa/The Turquoise Room , as well as the Lola Levine chapter book series, among many others. She is the recipient of the Christopher Award, two Américas Awards, and multiple starred reviews. Her work has been translated into a dozen languages, and has appeared in the NYTimes, The Washington Post, and on NPR's All Things Considered. When not writing for children, Brown serves as a professor of English at Northern Arizona University, where she teaches about US Latino and multicultural literature. Brown lives with her family in Flagstaff, Arizona. Her website is monicabrown.net.

Sara Palacios was born in Mexico City. She holds degrees in Graphic Design, Illustration, and Digital Graphic Techniques, and is pursuing her MFA in Illustration at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. She divides her time between Mexico City and San Francisco, California. Her website is sarapalacios.com.

PreS-Gr 2-Marisol McDonald is fiercely determined not to match. The character came out of Brown's own experience growing up in a bicultural home with a North American father and a Peruvian mother and not being sure where she fit in. This title finds Marisol preparing for her birthday party. Her friends ask her what sort of party she should have, and, of course, Marisol doesn't want one theme. When she goes shopping with her Mami, she insists on buying clothes that don't match. When the party arrives, Marisol has dressed up as a soccer-player-pirate-princess-unicorn. The mismatched party is a success, and is topped by a Skype visit with the child's Peruvian grandmother. Pair this with Marisol McDonald Doesn't Match/Marisol McDonald no combina (Children's Book Pr., 2011) for a dress-up storytime. (c) Copyright 2013. The confident, exuberant, bicultural-and-proud Marisol McDonald is back in this follow-up to Brown's introduction to the character, Marisol McDonald Doesn't Match/Marisol McDonald no combina (2011). Marisol struggles to pick a theme for her upcoming eighth birthday party. How can she choose among princesses and unicorns and soccer when she loves them all? As her mom gently reminds her, maybe she doesn't have to! What Marisol really hopes for her birthday is to see her abuela, who lives in Peru and with whom she rarely visits. The story's contemporary solution to this problem will resonate with many families who are living across great distances. The "unique, different and one-of-a-kind" Marisol McDonald continues to stand out as a character. She is self-assured and caring, without straying into didacticism. Her bicultural identity is a point of pride that imbues her personality. Pura Belpr Honor recipient Palacios' mixed-media illustrations once again visually express Marisol's originality. Bits of cut paper add unexpected texture, and the warm tones convey the closeness in Marisol's family. Domnguez's Spanish translation is also noteworthy; its emphasis on capturing the spirit of the language over literal words makes this book equally joyful in both English and Spanish.
