Summary:

Death's shadow: A successful theatrical director, Simon Fletcher, returns to Badger's Drift, his head filled with disturbing childhood memories. Soon after, a local property developer becomes the first in a string of baffling murders. Strangler's wood: When a beautiful Brazilian woman is found strangled with a striped necktie in Raven's Wood, Barnaby experiences a disturbing sense of déjà vu. His investigation leads him to a trail fo blackmail, greed and betrayal. Blood will out: Barnaby is enlisted to keep the peace when the arrival of two feuding clans of travelers disrupts the tranquility of Martyr Warren. Local magistrate and Falklands War veteran Hector Bridges gets fired up about the interlopers and unwisely marches into the fray. Beyond the grave: First the portrait of a wealthy village forefather is found slashed to shreds in a local museum. Then a string of unearthly happenings in the museum and its graveyard terrify the community. Barnaby and Troy are called upon to separate fact from fiction.

Those who long for the "good old days" when a good mystery program wasn't measured by the amount of bloodshed or extravagant special effects will love these series of modern cozies based on the novels of Caroline Graham. Set in the picturesque English villages of Midsomer County, Midsomer Murders, starring John Nettles as Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby, with Daniel Casey as Sergeant Troy, presents four cases of murder in each set. In Set 1, Death's Shadow features a series of vicious but seemingly unrelated murders of men who were friends as children but had drifted apart over time. Strangler's Wood brings death by necktie to a beautiful Brazilian woman and an uncomfortable feeling of déjà vu to Inspector Barnaby. When feuding clans of gypsies arrive, village life is in an uproar with murder, vigilante action, and long-buried secrets running rampant in Blood Will Out. Beyond the Grave features mutilated portraits and terrifying happenings in the local museum and its graveyard. In Dead Man's Eleven in Set 2, businessman and cricket fan Robert Cavendish, a man with few friends and many enemies, seems a perfect target for murder, but instead his young wife is beaten to death with a cricket bat. Who was the real target and why? When a tramp is found murdered in a ditch following a fox hunt, unexplained behavior and long-held secrets confuse the issue in Death of a Stranger. Blue Herrings focuses on a series of deaths at a home for the elderly. Judgement Day has many meanings as the inhabitants of Midsomer Mallow, a finalist in the "Perfect Village" competition, try to sway the judges in their favor while hoping that the serial killer at large will keep a low profile. Filled with complex characters, dark humor, and one plot twist after another, these stories bring new life to the old cozy mystery genre.
