Gr 4-7-- Volume three in this series about the major events of World War II reviews the war thus far, and then describes the events of 1943, beginning with the invasion of North Africa. Action then moves on to Sicily and Italy, followed by a shift in focus to MacArthur and Nimitz in the Pacific. One chapter briefly discusses conditions at home such as the treatment of the Nisei, rationing, and war production. Writing is clear and concise. Portraits of prominent figures are placed in the wide margins. Boxed information adds to the text. Full-page black-and-white photos of the period are included, as are maps in full color. The quality of this series continues to remain high. Add this to the collection and the cover art will do the rest. --Eldon Younce, Harper Elementary School, KS (c) Copyright 2010. Phot. Similar in format to Dolan's two previous volumes on World War II, the straightforward, factual text follows the American military successes and failures in Europe and the Pacific. Bland photographs and a few maps in color supplement the dry text. Bib., ind. (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

The volume outlines the war in Italy, plans for the invasion of Normandy, D-Day, the Battle of the Bulge, and efforts to repel the Japanese in the Pacific. The usefulness and interest of the book lies in Dolan's ability to succinctly connect the strategic influence of events on several fronts without confusing the reader. Black-and-white and color photographs, maps, and thumbnail sketches of important military figures are included. Bib., ind. (c) Copyright 2010. Gr 6 Up-A worthy follow-up to this series' predecessors. Once again, Dolan's thorough scholarship shines through in his highly readable, interest-grabbing prose and prudent use of cogent quotations. Coverage of the events of 1945 follows a short exposition of America's participation in the war from December 7, 1941, through the Battle of the Bulge in 1944. This description of the final offensive of the Wehrmacht against the Allies in the Ardennes leads into a review of the final days and inevitable death of the Third Reich. The author then jumps right into the liberation of the Philippines, the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, and the nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The war's final moments are related, as is a concise overview of events from 1945 to the end of the Cold War in the 1980s. An excellent selection of historical photographs, some in full color, helpful maps, and an index make this book ``a keeper.''-David A. Beginning with Eisenhower's attack on the Rhine River and ending with the Japanese surrender, the volume surveys the role of the United States in the last year of World War II. A brief introduction and conclusion summarize events before and after 1945. The dry military history provides bare facts and black-and-white photographs but lacks useful maps, enlightening anecdotes, or historical debate. Bib., ind. (c) Copyright 2010.
