Gr 9 Up-Wink, Poppy, and Midnight take turns narrating as listeners try to figure out who is telling the truth and who is lying. Wink is a bit odd and believes that Midnight is fated to be a hero, while Poppy is beautiful, superficial, and cruel. Midnight is an avid reader who was desperately in love with Poppy until he met Wink. Things are not what they seem, and each character has another side, another story, and another edge to this complicated tale, which is enhanced by lush language and vivid descriptions. The three different narrators, Michael Crouch, Alicyn Packard, and Caitlin Davies, use tones and pacing to add dimension to this tale. This book is geared toward older teens, as there are vivid depictions of mature relationships and cursing. While the cover is intriguing, there is virtually no summary on the back of the case, making this audiobook one that will need some help getting off the shelf. VERDICT Though the work will engage fans of duplicitous narrators, listeners may become tired of the constant dialogue and little plot movement. Purchase for larger collections only.
