True to his nature, Zeus falls in love with a river nymph and changes her into a tree to protect her from his jealous wife, Hera. In retaliation, Hera becomes pregnant and gives birth to a strange insect-like child. The old Oracle passes his gift to Eddie, a mentally challenged youth with a simple heart, and a young man named Possum finds a strange and beautiful woman trapped in a piece of wood. The time is the 21st century; the place, a small community in the Catskill Mountains. What's first novel re-creates the icons of Greek mythology, complete with old rivalries, twists of Fate, and the triumph of the indomitable human will over impossible odds. Delightfully told, with touches of humor and moments of dramatic intensity, this tale of jealousy and love among gods and humans belongs in most fantasy collections. (c) Copyright 2010.
