On a balmy July night in 1904, a wiry figure sauntered alone through the dim alleys of Honolulu's Chinatown. He strolled up a set of rickety steps and into a smoky gambling den ringing with jeers of card sharks and crapshooters. By the time anyone recognized the infamous bullwhip dangling from his hand, it was too late. Single-handedly, the feared, five-foot-tall Hawaiian cop, Chang Apana, had lined up forty gamblers and marched them down to the police station.
So begins Charlie Chan, Yunte Huang's absorbing history of the legendary Cantonese detective, born in Hawaii around 1871, who inspired a series of fiction and movie doubles that long defined America's distorted perceptions of Asians and Asian Americans. In chronicling the real-life story and the fraught narrative of one of Hollywood's most iconic detectives, Huang has fashioned a historical drama where none was known to exist, creating a work that will, in the words of Jonathan Spence, "permanently change the way we tell this troubled yet gripping story."
Himself a literary sleuth, Huang has traced Charlie Chan's evolution from island legend to pop culture icon to vilified, postmodern symbol, ingeniously juxtaposing Apana's rough-and-tumble career against the larger backdrop of a territorial Hawaii torn apart by virulent racism. Apana's bravado prompted not only Earl Derr Biggers, a Harvard graduate turned author, to write six Charlie Chan mysteries but also Hollywood to manufacture over forty movies starring a grammatically challenged detective with a knack for turning Oriental wisdom into singsong Chinatown blues.
Examining hundreds of biographical, literary, and cinematic sources, in English and in his native Chinese, Huang has pursued the trail of Charlie Chan since the mid-1990s, searching for clues in places as improbable as Harvard Yard, an Ohio cornfield, a weathered Hawaiian cemetery, and the Shanghai Bund. His efforts to refashion the Charlie Chan legend became a personal mission, as if the answers he sought would reshape his own identity--no longer a top Chinese student but an immigrant American eager to absorb the bewildering history of his adopted homeland.
"With rare personal intensity and capacious intelligence," Huang has ascribed a starring role to "the honorable detective," one far more enduring than any of his wisecracking movie parts. Huang presents American history in a way that it has never been told before.

Yunte Huang is a Guggenheim Fellow and a professor of English at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is the author of Transpacific Imaginations and Charlie Chan, which won the 2011 Edgar Award and was a finalist for the 2010 National Book Critics Circle Award in Biography. Having come of age in China as a student in the time of Tiananmen, Huang now lives in Santa Barbara, California.

The fictional Chinese-American detective and his real-life model anchor this enjoyable if unfocused meditation on the cultural construction of race. English prof Huang (Transpacific Imaginations) recounts the life of Chang Apana, a Chinese immigrant police detective in Honolulu who inspired mystery writer Earl Derr Biggers to create the Confucian sleuth Chan, who appeared in six novels and more than 40 movies (usually played by white actors). Apana is a colorful figure, complete with cowboy hat and bullwhip, but both he and his connection to the Chan character, whom he little resembled, are marginal to the story Huang wants to tell about racial attitudes and tensions in early 20th-century America. (Apana is a passive observer, for example, in the account of an explosive Hawaiian interracial rape case.) More convincing is Huang's nuanced analysis of Chan and his mincing gait, ingratiating smile, pidgin English, and fortune cookie aphorisms. Disputing writers who consider him a demeaning stereotype, Huang discerns behind Chan's exoticism a positive and formidable figure who embodies the "creative genius" of American "cultural miscegenation." *Starred Review* The Charlie Chan we know from the movies (played by Swedish actor Warner Oland) had two strands to his DNA: E. D. Biggers' immensely popular Charlie Chan novels and the actual man on whom Biggers based his tales. The model for Biggers' canny Honolulu detective was Chang Apana, who rose from Hawaiian paniolo (cowboy) in the 1890s to Humane Society officer to Honolulu cop and detective in the early twentieth century. Chang's beat concentrated on the notorious gambling dens, scenes and seeds of drugs and violence in the labyrinth of Honolulu's Chinatown. Huang, who was born in China and is a professor of English at the University of California, brings a wealth of perspective on the treatment of Chinese, both historically and in fiction, to this work. Readers will learn a great deal about how the Chinese fared as plantation workers in Hawaii, about Hawaiian history, about Chang, about Biggers, and about the meaning of the Chan oeuvre, both books and movies. Huang also works in his own story of immigrating to the U.S., which is both stirring and illuminating. This is a beautifully written analysis of racism and an appreciation of Charlie Chan and Chang Apana, made credible by Huang's background. LORD PETER WIMSEY, Hercule Poirot, Philo Vance, many another - they are like a drooping bouquet of exotically named flowers, withering away in one of subliterature's deserted mansions. Once, during the 20th century's interwar years, the first great age of detective fiction, they were the genre's stars, often equipped with comical verbal tics or curious sideline interests, but always abiding by the ironbound conventions of classic crime fiction. Their work demanded more ratiocination than roughhouse and, in the end, a gathering of all the murder mystery's many suspects in the country house library, where the gentlemanly investigator reveals the killer's always surprising identity. Perhaps the most exotic of these brainiacs was Charlie Chan. He was, to begin with, Chinese, the only member of a minority group in a usually WASPy crowd - modest, even obsequious, in manner, with a gift for amusing aphorisms ("Murder like potato chip - cannot stop at just one") and, as it happens, for survival. He, alone, persists in people's memories as an easily identified pop culture icon, a status attested to by Yunte Huang's "Charlie Chan," a capacious, somewhat baggy, but always entertaining book about Chan and all the factors that account for his longevity. Before Huang is done, we have been treated to a vast gaggle of material about Chan's creator, Earl Derr Biggers; Honolulu (where Chan was nominally a police detective); Chinese culture and immigration to the West; Hollywood moviemaking, not excluding Fu Manchu and Anna May Wong - everything that might possibly shed light on the Honorable Detective's life and times and popularity. Believe me, no one is ever going to write a book like this about Hercule Poirot. Biggers, the bright and agreeable product of a small Ohio town and Harvard, had his first success with a novel, "Seven Keys to Baldpate," which George M. Cohan turned into a stage success before Biggers was 30. The play remained a favorite with amateur drama companies for many decades thereafter. Biggers wrote the first of his six Chan novels a dozen years later. The first Chan movie, a silent, appeared in 1926 and was followed by 46 more, mainly at Fox and low-rent Monogram, which released the last of them in 1949. Thus, the simple response to the question of Chan's longevity is all those movies, which played on television for decades. That, however, says little about their intrinsic quality. Biggers was a good writer, possessed of a simple, straightforward prose style and a gift for patient, plausible plotting. I've sampled some of his novels recently and can testify that they can be read today without condescension. Something similar can be said of the movies. Though inexpensively and quickly made, they were well written, sensibly directed and decently acted. From time to time young performers like Rita Hayworth and Ray Milland turned up in them, particularly in support of the first and best Chan, Warner Oland, the Swedish actor who, alas, drank himself to death (he was replaced by Sidney Toler). There are wet, earnest commentators who think Chan should have been played by an Asian actor, conveniently forgetting that Asians were then in short supply in Hollywood, forgetting as well that the issue was not Chan's race but the respect in which he was always held. That's another reason the Chan films continue to play so agreeably today. You don't have to make allowances for any sort of casual racism in them; there is none. Biggers is one author who would have had no complaints about the way Hollywood treated his liberal-minded work. Unfortunately, he did not live long enough to fully enjoy Chan's growing popularity. Plagued by illness much of his life, he died at 48, around the time the fourth of the Oland pictures was released. Yet Chan left one unsolved mystery behind him. That has to do with his origins, and it is one Huang does not, in my opinion, satisfactorily solve. There was, in Honolulu, a real-life Chinese detective on the police force, a man named Chang Apana, who people early on insisted was the model for Chan. It was an idea that Biggers affably endorsed. In fact, however, Apana was Chan's opposite. Far from being portly and slow moving, he was a wiry little guy, no more than five feet tall. He was also functionally illiterate and so far as we can tell from Huang, incapable of stringing together a complex chain of thought. He was a muscular street cop whose specialty was raiding opium dens and gambling dens, wielding his trademark bullwhip to newsworthy effect. It may be - we can't know - that he spoke "pidgin" English, which is how Huang insists on characterizing Chan's diction. However, you don't come up with all those well-turned aphorisms without having a smart and ambitious sense of language's possibilities. On an admittedly higher level, this is the kind of thing Nabokov delightfully did with "Pnin," about another émigré struggling to master a second language. BUT if people preferred a realistic rather than literary lineage for Chan, so be it. Biggers was happy to go along with the gag. In his report about himself for a Harvard publication, he claimed to have come across Apana in an obscure corner of a Honolulu newspaper. But Huang has gone back to the city's two major papers of the time, and they do not support that account, a fact he honorably reports without abandoning his faith in Apana's foundational function. In truth, Apana is of more practical use to Huang than to Biggers - an instrument that permits him to widen his view of the Asian-American experience over the last 150 years. Simply put, Chan, like all of his contemporary fictional detectives, crawled out from beneath Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's overcoat. Sherlock Holmes was the model everyone imitated - not very well - during the years when mysteries were the rage. This used to drive Edmund Wilson crazy. He deemed the consumption of mysteries a form of addiction, on a level with smoking and doing crossword puzzles, while woefully wondering what the likes of T. S. Eliot and William Butler Yeats saw in them. He spared some kind words for Holmes, a pleasure of his childhood and, presciently, for Raymond Chandler, whose manner obviously shifted the ground in this field. Certainly, the ease with which the more muscular romanticism of Philip Marlowe and his ilk wiped out the old gentility suggests that the "classic" mystery had a much looser hold on the popular imagination than Wilson imagined. Cold war exigencies demanded more up-and-doing detectives, tough guys who could take it and dish it out. To his credit, Huang, Chinese born but now a professor of English at the University of California, Santa Barbara, is only mildly interested in that kind of cultural Big Think. His attention is firmly fixed on the Chinese immigrant experience and, of course, on a detective whose urbane presentation ran counter to the racism of his era. Charlie Chan remains, in himself, a sly and delightful figure, worthy of nostalgia - and of Huang's very original, good-humored and passionately researched book. To accomplish this, Huang (English, Univ. of California, Santa Barbara) deftly interweaves several discrete, overlapping narratives. The dominant history is that of the rough-and-tumble adventures of a real-life Cantonese detective, Chang Apana, working in Honolulu in the first half of the 20th century. Closely intertwined is the story of the creator of Charlie Chan, Earl Derr Biggers, whose six Charlie Chan mysteries provide a fictional double to Apana. The novels lead to another narrative--some 47 Charlie Chan films along with a plethora of spin-offs on television and in other media. And Huang adds his own story of his long-term fascination with Charlie Chan, thus investigating a broad swath of the US's racial heritage up to the present. Huang's immigrant experiences afford him a convincing vantage on Charlie Chan's "tortured legacy," which "at once endears and offends millions." His vibrant narrative tells the stories of Biggers, a newspaperman turned novelist, who created Chan as an alternative to Sax Rohmer's villainous character Fu Manchu; Chang Apana, a legendary, crime-busting Chinese cop in Honolulu who wore a Panama hat, carried a bullwhip and became the real-life basis for Chan; and the fictional Chan, who entered American popular culture just as nativists succeeded in pushing through anti-Chinese immigrant legislation. Chan was played in hit movies by Swedish actor Warner Oland and others and has been vehemently dismissed in recent years as nothing more than a racial stereotype by author and playwright Frank Chin and other prominent Asian Americans. Huang takes a balanced view. Chan is a racist stereotype, he writes, but he is also a folk hero, exemplifying the "cultural miscegenation" that critic Stanley Crouch calls "the catalyst of the American experience." The author makes a convincing case for Chan's place in film history not as an Uncle Tom but rather as one in a line of wise detectives with eccentricities, including Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe. Huang (English, Univ. of California, Santa Barbara; Transpacific Imaginations) here gives us a fascinating examination of Charlie Chan that is many books in one. He begins with a study of Chang Apana (1871-1933), the real detective on whom Charlie Chan was based. Apana, who was born in Hawaii and lived in China from age three to ten, policed Honolulu's Chinatown after previous posts as a cowboy and as an officer for the Humane Society. Huang then turns to Earl Derr Biggers, a Harvard graduate and writer who created the fictitious Chinese American detective Chan. Biggers himself proves to be equally intriguing. Huang also examines the cultural phenomenon of Charlie Chan in films and other media, exploring the detective's place in America's cultural memory. Huang believes there are many layers to the meaning of Biggers's creation: Chan cannot be easily dismissed simply as a product of American racism. Huang's personal reflections are welcome interludes in this most compelling work. VERDICT This book has broad appeal to readers interested in film history, ethnic and cultural studies, literary biography, and pop culture.
