Alby and his pet squeeble, Squee, have loads of great toys, but the thing they like best is playing in the mud at the bottom of the garden - the one place they're not allowed to go! They would have got away with it, but Squee's muddy footprints gave them away. Can Alby save him from being sent to the squeeble-house?

Author Notes

Kay Umansky was born in Plymouth, England on December 6, 1946. She trained as a teacher and taught in primary schools for numerous years. She also acted and played music including performing in a soul band with her husband.

Her first book, a collection of songs called Phantasmagoria, was published in 1985. She received the 1993 Nottinghamshire Book Award for Pongwiffy and the Spell of the Year, the 1999 Times Educational Supplement Junior Music Book Award for Three Rapping Rats, and the 2008 Stockton Book of the Year for Clover Twig and the Incredible Flying Cottage. In 2004, the Pongwiffy series was adapted for television by the animation company Telemagination.

Booklist Review

Alby is green, with three eyes and four arms. He has parents and a sister, but his most loyal companion is his pet Squeeble, Squee. He also loves his three-headed stuffed animal, Purpy. This I Am Reading book gets its fun from detailing life on Alby's alien planet, where things have the oddest names: dinner is Woodlydoodlynoodly Strings, a squirt gun is called a Groobleblaster, and a musical instrument is called a Nargian Nose Flute. Readers will have fun trying to sound out the words, but they'll also appreciate the story, which centers on Squee's inability to wipe his paws, leading to his banishment from Alby's bed. Alby's temporary solution to Squee's angst is sweet (he gives Purpy to Squee for company). The glossy, computer-enhanced artwork catches the (many) differences and similarities between alien and human life.
