Summary
Farrah "Digit" Higgins may be going to MIT in the fall, but this L.A. high school genius has left her geek self behind in another school district so she can blend in with the popular crowd at Santa Monica High and actually enjoy her senior year. But when Farrah, the daughter of a UCLA math professor, unknowingly cracks a terrorist group's number sequence, her laid-back senior year gets a lot more interesting. School Library Journal Review
Gr 9 Up-Farrah "Digit" Higgins is a quirky math genius who wallpapers her bedroom in bumper stickers and is embarrassed by her brilliance. "There's a fine line between a gift and a disability," she believes. Farrah changes schools with the hope that she can blend in with the crowd, become an average teenager, and enjoy her senior year. However, her aspirations for a regular life are disrupted when she accidentally cracks an eco-terrorist group's code that is linked to a bomb that is set off at JFK airport in New York, and the FBI wants to use her brainpower to catch the terrorists. Soon she is faking her own kidnapping and flying across the country to find the criminals, all with the help of a sexy 21-year-old agent, John Bennett. He thinks Farrah's abilities are amazing and that she's hot, and a romance begins. As the teen hides from the terrorists who want to kill her, she comes to terms with the fact that she will always be a brain and embraces her nickname. Readers will want to know if the romance will last, and will be surprised by what happens. Teens struggling with self-identity will relate to Digit and enjoy this quick, suspenseful read.-Shannon Seglin, Patrick Henry Library, Vienna, VA (c) Copyright 2012. Horn Book Review
High school senior Farrah "Digit" Higgins has always tried to mask her math genius, but there's no denying it after she breaks a terrorist group's secret code. Suddenly she's in hiding with a young (and attractive) FBI agent, praying for a return to cell phones, showers, and food other than roast beef sandwiches. Farrah balances her smarts with her wiles in this energetic and amusing read. (c) Copyright 2012. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
Kirkus Review
An engaging heroine is at the center of this slim spy thriller from debut novelist Monaghan. Farrah Higgins has a gift for finding patterns, but she couldn't control it in middle school. Saddled with the nickname Digit, Farrah resolved to fit in once she reached high school by hiding her math skills. Then Farrah stumbles upon an eco-terrorist organization after their suicide bomb attack on JFK Airport, and the terrorists want her dead. If that seems unbelievable, it's taken even further by Farrah's FBI protector, the cute, young rookie agent John Bennett, who works with Farrah to uncover a blackmail scheme involving the attack's bomber. This leads to bad guys chasing them all over New York, thanks to a mole inside the FBI. Meanwhile, Farrah is falling for John--and he feels something for her, too. Even with all these credulity-stretchers, this novel is so much fun to read that readers will buy it all, thanks to Farrah's smart, witty voice and the gentle romance between John and Farrah. Check your mind at the door and enjoy this novel of two young adults caught up in a world of danger, adventure and, possibly, true love. Booklist Review
All through high school, Digit has been hiding her fascination (OK, obsession) with patterns in numbers and her uncanny mathematical abilities. While watching a popular TV show, she notices a series of numbers in the credits. She cracks the code, discovers its relation to a deadly terrorist attack, and starts to investigate. Suddenly a murder target, Digit receives FBI protection and goes into hiding with one of the youngest, smartest, best-looking men in the bureau. Soon they realize that a double agent within the FBI poses a more imminent threat than the terrorist organization. The action is fast-paced and danger always threatens, while romance simmers throughout the novel. Digit's first-person narration covers her early decision to hide her math-geek nature behind a superficial front as well as her realization that she is happiest among people who accept her as she is. In a first novel that combines adventure, mystery, love, and humor, Monaghan shows a talent for creating a likable narrator and for keeping the pages turning.--Phelan, Carolyn Copyright 2010 Booklist
