Author Notes

Lee Bermejo began drawing comics in 1997 for WildStorm Studios in San Diego at age 19. He collaborated with acclaimed writer Brian Azzarello on the graphic novels JOKER and LUTHOR, and worked with writer John Arcudi on the Superman feature in WEDNESDAY COMICS. He has also worked on HELLBLAZER with writer Mike Carey and GLOBAL FREQUENCY with writer Warren Ellis. Bermejo has illustrated the covers to the line of Vertigo Crime graphic novels, beginning with FILTHY RICH, written by Brian Azzarello, and DARK ENTRIES, written by Ian Rankin. Bermejo has lived in Italy since 2003.

In the aftermath of the Batman: Endgame story arc, a vacuum exists in the Gotham City superhero community, and who better to fill it than a diverse team of teenagers with axes to grind? Bermejo (Batman: Noel) is joined by artists Jorge Corona (Teen Titans Go!) and Rob Haynes (Batman: Black and White) to begin the sagas of six heroes collected by an unknown benefactor called the Nest to bring justice to the broken streets of Gotham. Corona's wild, kinetic style lends intensity to even the quietest scenes, allowing Bermejo room to explore teen melodrama in his own brooding style. The new Robins bring gender, racial, and class diversity to the Bat-books in an authentic way that reflects the social circles modern young adults experience. A story drawn by James Harvey (Masterplasty) shifts suddenly to pop art-inspired designs and sly Easter eggs, providing an intermission of sorts before Corona and Haynes return to push this volume to its action-packed finale. This "Robin" designates a sort of Baker Street Irregulars for the Batman operation, made up of disaffected teens: rebellious, inspired by charismatic heroes, and itching for something cool to do. Moreover, they reflect the city's ethnic variety. When newbie Duke Thomas discovers a conspiracy to blow up city landmarks, the team finds out that the vigilante life brings tragedy, opprobrium, and self-doubt. Colorful, well-designed, unpretty art.
