As a boy, it was clear that Gene had unusual gifts. He knew who would die soon, and he could tell who was on the phone before anyone answered it. Most of all, he could sense who was sick in the family - and cure them by the laying on of hands. Gene was doing what came naturally. His old-world parents, however, found his propensities frightening. Powers passed down by Satan, agreed the parish priest as he performed an exorcism ... without success. Young Gene was then sent to a mental institution for a year-long regimen of electric shock treatments. The pain and anguish he felt quickly taught him to hide his God-given qualities; in fact, he bore no memory of them. Whose Hands Are These? tells how a chance incident reawakened Gene's curative powers, and how an agonizing inner battle ensued - until Gene realized that he had been graced with the means to do good for mankind.

As a child, Egidio allegedly saw auras around people, could sense when they were sick and what was wrong with them, sometimes foresaw the future and once healed a neighbor's thumb that had been nearly sliced through simply by holding it. For this, he was taken to priests and doctors, and finally institutionalized for a year and forced to endure repeated electric shock treatments. These measures did not eliminate Egidio's powers, but taught him to hide them and to keep up a facade of, as he puts it, "Mr. Normal." He grew up, served in the navy, married, raised a family and worked as an electrician. After 25 years, when he suddenly lost his wife, his money and his business, he felt "the universe gave me a wake-up call that was impossible to ignore," and returned to healing, this time as his life's work. Egidio now runs a clinic, and likens the healing he does to "jump-starting a car," allowing energy "from the universe" to pass from him to others. But while his hands may be gifted at healing, they wield a pen awkwardly. Egidio's memoir contains some distracting scenes (e.g., a discussion about UFOs with a Russian reporter), fails to make full use of its recurring theme of electricity as a potentially unifying metaphorand, most crucially, rests on simplistic metaphysics ("The body is merely a servant of the mind"). This autobiographical account of a regular guy who practices laying on of hands is frustrating for the reader: too much extraneous detail of Egidio's life and not enough specifics on how he is often able to heal up to 2,500 people physically and spiritually in a single day. Egidio successfully suppressed his special powers for 25 years after being committed to a mental institution at age eight by his frightened immigrant parents. After the failure of both his marriage and his electrical contracting business, Egidio was startled to find that he could heal people by touching them. What followed were years of starts and stops in founding healing centers and many trips to Russia and Germany, where his powers were welcomed by individuals and groups. Egidio describes how he was called to visit cemeteries and concentration camps in Eastern Europe to release suffering, earthbound souls from these locations. Short chapters in the last third of the book recount various individual healings, each with its unique, often commonsense lesson (e.g., the importance of a positive attitude, the value of meditation or prayer). This is high-interest material, presented in straightforward but not elegant prose, made all the more believable by the down-to-earth personality of its author. --Penny Spokes
