When wartime hero Charles Kennington returns from a secret mission, he visits his onetime colleagues, among them Nigel Strangeways, at the Ministry of Morale. He learns his former fiancee, the beautiful Nita, is now having an affair with the director, his brother-in-law. Strangeways is pulled into a murder investigation when Nita is suddenly poisoned.
